Indoor residual spraying (IRS)
IRS coats indoor walls with a long-lasting insecticide. Malaria mosquitoes rest on walls after biting, pick up the insecticide and die. It is one of the main tools used in malaria programmes worldwide.
How IRS is done
Prepare
Food, water, utensils and bedding are taken out; furniture moved from walls.
Protect
Trained sprayers in overalls, masks and gloves use calibrated compression sprayers.
Spray
Even vertical bands on walls and ceilings, including behind furniture.
Return when dry
Rooms are closed until dry, then cleaned floors and you move back in.
After spraying
- Do not wash or paint sprayed walls; the effect lasts for months
- Sweep floors normally
- Keep using bed nets for extra protection
Built on field experience
Our founder ran malaria vector control, including indoor residual spraying, in refugee camps in South Sudan serving more than 200,000 people, and led malaria control in 46 Afghan refugee camps in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. We bring the same standards to schools, hospitals, camps and housing societies in KP.
